The World's First Head Transplant will occur in 2017


Valery Spiridonov, 30, is set to be the world's first head transplant recipient. The surgery will be performed by Sergio Canavero, an Italian neurosurgeon.The historical procedure is expected to last up to 30 hours. 

To clarify, Spiridonov, will have his removed and cooled as well as the body of the donor in order to extend the period during which the cells can survive without oxygen.

According to Canavero's calculations, if everything goes to plan, the two years between now and the surgery will be used to extensively verify all scientific calculations and plan the the procedure. The doctor and other specialists wants to be 99% sure of the surgery's success.

Spiridonov, joked and said "I'm not going to let this stress me out, I wouldn't want to lose my head or anything." -EE
