BMX Icon Dave Mirra has Died

According to the Associate Press, BMX bike legend Dave Mirra, who once held the record for the most X Games medals -- has died of an apparent suicide.

Police in Greenville, NC are reporting that an officer found Mirra in his truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was a humble guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon," said Greenville Mayor, Allen Thomas.

Mirra was an absolutely brilliant BMX rider and won 14 gold medals at X Games, even though his career was nearly ended in 1993 after he was hit by a drunk driver. This had no effect on Mirra as he continued to win X Games medals from 1995 to 2008.

He was also involved in rally car driving and competed in ironman competitions and triathlons.
