2017 Films You Probably Haven't Heard of Yet

Each year, by January 1st, the list of potential blockbusters, and big-budget action sequels for the upcoming year, is common knowledge for the general public. This gives people a chance to build up their own personal hype, that way, by the time the film is released, they can't wait to jump in their cars, head down to the theater and shell out an average of $15 a person to watch a 1 1/2 to 3 hour film and pay a 2000% profit margin on popcorn, candy and soda, it's a very simple psychology that big budget films follow. So rather than give you information about the latest Transformers or Spider-Man films, I'm going to list some of the upcoming films worth your time that you may not be familiar with in particular order.

Out of all the films I plan on mentioning, this movie is likely the one you may be most familiar with on account of the director being the wildly talented and successful Christopher Nolan (TDK Trilogy, Instellar, Inception).

Dunkirk explores what transpires when Allied soldiers from Britain, Belgium, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German Army on the beaches on Dunkirk and evacuated in Operation Dynamo between May 26 and June 4, 1940 during the early stages of World War 2. Dunkirk stars Tom Hardy, Aneurin Barnard and Cillian Murphy, and will be released in theaters on July 21st.

This is not going to be the first film adaption of the hit Stephen King Novel of the same name, but it is the first film adaption of The Dark Tower in nearly 30 years. The film follows an 11-year-old boy who discovers clues about the existence of inter-dimensional portals, but between monsters and an evil sorcerer (Matthew McConaughey), the boy learns that some things are left best undiscovered. The film also stars Idris Elba and Tom Taylor, and is directed by Nikolaj Arcel. The Dark Tower hits theaters July 28th, 2017.

No official trailer is currently available for movie adaption of The Dark Tower, so here is a short clip featuring the synopsis of the film as well as a background for the novel.

Holland is brought on to the mysterious firm and rises quickly only to find out that the company deals in strange methods involving privacy, surveillance and freedom and soon learns that her decisions and actions will ultimately determine the future of humanity.

The Circle is directed by James Ponsoldt and will be released April  28th in theaters.

It looks like Hollywood is headed to Mars again. However, this time it's not about exploration, but about colonization. The story follows a group of astronauts that include a scientist who doesn't discover her pregnancy until the trip to the red planet has already commenced. The woman gives birth to a boy who is the first human ever to be born on Mars, but unfortunately dies during childbirth. 16 years later, the boy learns the origin of the astronauts he was raised by and begins taking an interest in Earth after making contact with girl around his age through an internet chat site. The Space Between Us stars Asa Butterfield, Gary Oldman and is directed by Peter Chelsom, and will arrive in theaters February 3rd.

With the success of Cloverfield, and 10 Cloverfield Lane, J.J. Abrams has decided to produce another film in the Cloverfield shared universe, this time featuring a team of astronauts aboard a space station that find themselves alone after a scientific experiment causes Earth to disappear. When a space station appears however, the space station crew must fight for their survival following their unthinkable discovery.

The film stars Daniel Bruhl and Elizabeth Debicki, and is directed by Julius Onah. God Particle is tentatively scheduled for a October 27th, release date. Just like the Dark Tower, this film does not have a trailer available yet, so here is short clip explaining the film and how it will tie in the Cloverfield series.

I'm taking donations to cover the cost for the amount of times I will likely be headed to the theaters this year. -EE
